Great piece, Sinead. The "cognitive debt" framing maps onto something real in the neuroplasticity literature. The brain genuinely restructures away from capacities it stops using. It's not metaphorical. It's measurable.

What I find missing from most of this conversation is the solution side. I've been working on a framework I call "cognitive upsizing," and the core idea is simple: every time AI takes a cognitive task off your plate, you need to replace it with a bigger, juicier problem. Not busywork. Genuinely harder thinking. The kind of complex, uncomfortable problem-solving that keeps cognitive pressure on the brain. Because the mechanism that causes atrophy, neuroplasticity, works in both directions. If you let AI handle the easy stuff and then sit idle, you decay. But if you use that freed-up capacity to wrestle with problems you previously didn't have the bandwidth for, you actually grow. The brain doesn't care what you're thinking about. It cares that you're thinking hard.

The danger isn't AI doing our thinking. It's AI doing our thinking, and us not finding anything harder to replace it with.

insightful read! appreciate discourse around historical patterns that mirror AI advancements and the words of caution about resisting atrophy… what will our minds be needed for? we evolve into a new aptitude entirely?
